Last year I chose the Spotlight Collection over the Golden Collection to spare my library all the Speedy Gonzales shorts. Frankly, the humor is all the same in that series. It seems to be the same with this years crop as well. Die hards will enjoy the Golden Collection, and I am glad that Warner Bros. offers us the chance to decide for ourselves. Here is a breakdown of what is available on this two-disc set.

These are the only discs you need from this year’s Golden Collection unless you are a Bob Clampett fan, a fan of the 70s and 80s TV specials, or like the really, really old, badly dated cartoons from the 30s and early 40s.

The year is 1934. Precisely twenty years has passed since the timely death of Cyrus West. And now, since where there is a will, there’s a way–It’s time to celebrate!–One of our lucky guests (all of whom are related) will inherit a fortune via a reading from beyond the grave! This whimsical film is designed for an intelligent audience. Its characters are (with a few dastardly exceptions) highly likable people engaging in interesting conversations. Exclusively filmed in London, England, we soon find ourselves surrounded by a most fitting ambiance: Spooky house, too much floor space, constant downpour, a frequent roar of thunder, and the most wonderful indoor fire one could imagine! It’s great–In fact perfect–For anyone who is a chicken at heart but wants desperately to enjoy a horror movie! You see, it seems the technical crew didn’t quite want to really frighten us. Perhaps the intention was just to get us thinking a bit. For one thing, no one seems concerned about (what is certain to be) a shocking electric bill as the lighting is near brilliant at all times (obviously, the old and remarkable mansion wasn’t refurbished with dimmer switches)! Dinner is served, the main course being “Bombay Chicken (with extra curry)”. “I think this chicken died in 1914,” announces one uninhibited soul. Next come the creeping shadows (“only the shadow knows”), secret passageways, escape hatches, screams in the night, a character who disappears in the middle of conversation, an old clock that starts to chime but never finishes, and yes, even a beautiful black cat. Enter (speaking of beauty) actress Olivia Hussey (“Cicily Young”) who proves she is equally splendid with make-up as she is without (for suitable comparison, please see her in the notorious “Black Christmas” which is most definitely NOT for the faint of heart). Olivia does it a lot with her eyes not to mention a very appropriate and low cut red dress. At one point, left in the bedroom by herself a bit too long, “Cicily” remarks (upon her roommates’ eventual return), “Where have you been?”; Roommate: “Not far.”; Cicily: “Being alone in this place gives me the double creeps.” Also joining the party are a host of charming characters who are dressed quite stiffly in formal attire consistent with the time period. There’s “Harry”, a naturally likable chap; The wrinkly “Mrs. Pleasant”; Mrs. Crosby (full of stately mannerisms); The lovely “Annabelle” (wrinkle free); “Susan”, outspoken, and in need of a large mole being removed from the left side of her face); And “Paul”, a fine gentleman but also Annabelle’s “kissin’ cousin”. There’s also a surprise guest from “down the way” who comes barging on the scene to announce (in Paul Revere fashion), “There’s an escaped homicidal maniac on the loose who has escaped from a home for the criminally insane!” . . . “We’re just up the road,” he adds. Furthermore, he always tries to get in A HOUSE whenever he escapes! Then he likes to hide! “I’m asking everyone in the area to lock themselves in until morning,” adds this bearer of “good tidings”. This provokes quite a reaction among the genetically predispositioned (mental illness happens to run in the family) (“Remember: Cream first, and coffee later”). A couple of gems: “I don’t know why I should be glum”; “Well, I wasn’t mad when I came here, but I certainly will be soon!” Get a grip! The relatives can all take comfort in knowing that Mr. West knows something they don’t! None of us thought it would turn into this type of evening, but not to worry: All of the jolts are left in Dr. Frankenstein’s laboratory.
Carol Lynley looks like she’s having a ball in this fun, creepy version of the stage play about a bunch of would-be heirs stuck spending the night in a house of horrors. If your kids are planning a slumber party, or you’re in the mood for Drive-In fare, this is an entertaining choice for your movie viewing!

Jean Cocteau’s Beauty and the Beast (1946) is not only one of the greatest films I have seen – a perfect blend of poetic fantasy and psychological depth – it’s also one of my all-time favorites. The restored version from the Criterion Collection is among the best DVDs I have seen, both for the breathtaking clarity of the image and sound, and for a wealth of supplemental materials, including several fascinating documentaries, essays in a lavish printed booklet, and Philip Glass’s complete opera synched to the film on a separate audio track.
With each re-viewing of Beauty and the Beast, I see new layers of Cocteau’s vision. As a child, I was enthralled by how real, and actually lived in, this fairy tale world seemed. And I was spellbound by the Beast, brought fully, both horribly and tenderly, to life by Jean Marais’ riveting performance. I will never forget the Beast’s death scene, when Marais expresses worlds of pain, love, and self-understanding solely through the eyes peering out of a feral, hair-covered face.
The film does not need today’s digital special effects; it still works perfectly with its own low-tech but deeply resonant wonders. And it is a triumph of design. Cocteau worked closely with production “illustrator” Christian Bérard and cinematographer Henri Alekan to give the picture what he called “the soft gleam of hand-polished old silver.” It is filled with simple but gorgeous – and unforgettable – tableaux, from a corridor of disembodied human arms grasping candelabra that burst into flame as you pass by, to Beauty gliding in slow motion through the enchanted castle. Then there is the indefinable magic of the scene at the manor with huge white sheets drying in the sun, creating silhouettes of striking power. (Cocteau’s crew spent weeks searching everywhere for sheets without patches, an almost unheard of luxury in postwar France.)
Technically, and aesthetically, it is astonishing how Cocteau wrested so much visual interest from a film comprised almost entirely of medium shots. A close look reveals how dynamically, yet subtly, unbalanced most of the compositions are. We rarely see a subject head on, but rather from a slightly skewed angle. And during some of the most important moments, Cocteau foregrounds an unimportant object (a candlestick, a tree branch) to block our view, to make our imaginations fill in the obscured main details. Throughout he also makes evocative use of shadows, both where you would expect them, in the Beast’s mysterious realm, and where you might not, in the merchant’s strangely foreboding manor house. This tense visual quality meshes perfectly with the film’s complex emotional nature.
On one level, Beauty and the Beast is a perfect, and largely faithful, realization of a great fairy tale, originally written in 1756 by French author Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont while she served as a governess in Scotland. But Cocteau’s film exists on many other levels as well, which is why it continues to appeal as much to adults as children. There have been many interpretations, including symbolist, Jungian, Freudian, deconstructionist, and even gay readings (Cocteau is not only a preeminent author, poet, artist, playwright, and filmmaker of the 20th century, he is also a central gay icon). All of these views help reveal the many, and sometimes contradictory, layers of Cocteau’s vision.
At its simplest and most direct, the film paints a moral lesson as easily understood by a child as by most adults: Who and what you are – your true nature – matters more than your appearance. We see this idea embodied, in troubling ways, by many of the human characters, including Beauty’s two wicked sisters and, to a lesser extent, her wastrel brother Ludovic. But the most morally ambiguous character, and the one who gives the film considerable emotional depth, is Avenant. He is, of course, played by Jean Marais, who also performs the Beast and, at the end, Prince Ardent. Avenant is strikingly handsome, self-assured, and energetic, yet Marais also brings out his darker side, subtly in his attempted seductions of Beauty and overtly in his fatal greed at the end. What compounds Avenant’s resonance for the film comes out in one of the final lines. Beauty answers Prince Ardent’s question about whether she loved Avenant with a breathless, “Oh yes!” How, and why, could our heroine – who comes to see through the Beast’s fearsome persona to the torn yet righteous man within – ever have been in love with someone like Avenant? That is yet another of the film’s emotional mysteries, the ones which may appeal more to, and perhaps even unsettle, adult viewers.
One of the most fascinating, and visceral, comments on this film is musical. Composer Philip Glass (whose works include the operas Einstein on the Beach, Satyagraha, and The Voyage, and film scores Koyaanisqatsi, Mishima, and The Hours) set Cocteau’s screenplay to music which runs simultaneously with the picture on the DVD, as the composer intended. The film’s original, magisterial score by Georges Auric is one of cinema’s greatest; and Cocteau knew exactly when to use it – or silence – for maximum effect. But Glass uses his patented syncopated rhythms and repeated symmetrical sequences of chords to create a haunting alternate voice for the picture. Distinct from Auric, Glass’s score reveals the sometimes dark and disturbing emotional subtext, rather than the fairy tale sense of wonder. Previously I had liked the opera as an audio recording; but when joined with the film I found it utterly compelling.
Beauty and the Beast is a film I look forward to reexperiencing for the rest of my life. It has a way of getting under your skin, even entering your dreams. The closer you look at it, the more mysterious, and spellbinding, it becomes.
In this, his first feature film, director Jean Cocteau set a standard for filmmaking that not even he could surpass. A masterpiece of inventive, surreal imagery, this film captivates the viewer as few other films have. Haunting, lyrical, and enchanting, this film retells the story of an age old fairy tale classic, “Beauty and the Beast” by Jeanne Marie LePrince De Beaumont. The film is sheer poetry in motion.
This marvelous, exquisitely rendered adaptation centers around the core of the fairy tale. An impoverished merchant (Marcel Andre) comes across a most unusual chateau, deeply hidden in the forest, where he is provided with hospitality by an unseen host. Upon leaving, he happens to break off a rose from a rosebush in the garden of his reclusive host, in order to take it back to Beauty (Josette Day), the most beloved of his three daughters. This simple act calls forth his previously unseen host, The Beast (Jean Marais), who tells him that the theft of that which The Beast loves most will cost the merchant his life or the company of the one whom the merchant loves most, one of his daughters. Allowed to return home temporarily, the merchant tearfully recounts what happened to him, and Beauty surreptitiously goes in his place to the enchanted chateau upon a magical horse that seems to sparkle with fairy dust. It is there that she, too, meets The Beast. Alas, the path of true love does not run smoothly, and Beauty and The Beast, together, make that discovery.
Be prepared for a visual feast of dreamy black and white cinematography, as well as one of the most unusual sets ever to grace the silver screen. Living statuary, human candelabras, and tears that turn to diamonds are just some of the exquisite, surreal immagery that take the viewer’s breath away. Superlative performances by Josette Day and Jean Marais, as well as an excellent supporting cast, make this, indeed, a film to remember! Filmed in 1946, time has not dimished the ability of this masterpiece to enchant and captivate the viewer. Bravo!

Movie Title: Metropolis Metropolis is available for streaming or downloading. |
Fritz Lang’s METROPOLIS was very successful with both critics and audiences when it debuted in 1927 Berlin–but it was thereafter edited for distribution by Channing Pollock, who disliked it and removed great chunks of the film and substantially altered the storyline. The resulting film was admired for its visual style, but it proved a critical and box office disappointment. Neglected in the wake of sound, surviving prints of the film were left to corrode and decay–and when it began to reach the home market via VHS and DVD the results were very hit or miss; Blackhawk released a fairly credible version of the truncated film to home video, but for the most part the quality of these releases varied from barely mediocre to downright unwatchable.
Until now.
A great chunk of METROPOLIS–perhaps as much a quarter of more–has been forever lost, but this Kino Video DVD release offers the single best version of the film available. The previously cut footage that still exists has been restored; gaps in the film have been bridged by the occasional use of stills and explanatory title cards; the film itself has been painstakingly and digitally restored; and the soundtrack is the Gottfried Huppertz original created for the film’s 1927 Berlin debut. In seeing this version of METROPOLIS, I was struck by how very differently it reads from the previously available truncated version. The visual style and the story itself are much more exciting and cohesive, and in the wake of this restoration it becomes impossible to deny the film status as landmark of international cinema.
Freder Fredersen (Gustav Frohlich) is the son of Joh Fredersen (Alfred Able), who reigns over the great city of Metropolis. Freder is surprised to discover his lifestyle has been built on the unseen but backbreaking labor of an entire class of unseen workers who tend the machines that make the city run–and he descends to the subterranean levels of Metropolis in an effort to understand their lives… and, not incidentally, to find the mysterious but beautiful woman Maria (Brigitta Helm) who has inspired his interest in the workers’ plight. But his father is concerned by both Freder’s interest and Maria’s activities among the workers, and he turns to scientist C.A. Rotwang (Rudolf Klein-Rogge) for aid. Rotwang has created a robot, and he agrees to give it the likeness of Maria in order to undermine both Freder’s love for the girl and her own activities. But Rotwang has a hidden agenda of his own: once the robot has been unleashed, he will use her to destroy Metropolis and thereby exact revenge on Joh Fredersen for past transgressions against him.
In many respects the story is simplistic, but the film’s visual style and connotations are anything but. Deeply influenced by such art movements as Expressionism, Objectivism, Art Deco, and Bauhaus, the film is visually fascinating–not only in its scenic designs, but in director Lang’s famous skill at creating the powerful crowd scenes that dominate the film and building the pace and tension of the film as it moves toward an intense climax. But while one can–and many do–admire the film purely at this level, there is quite a lot going on in terms of philosophical content as well: while it offers few viable solutions, the film raises such issues as the relationship between capital and labor, the place of religion in modern society, human reaction to overwhelming technology, and (perhaps most interestingly) the drift of government into a class-conscious corporate entity. And religious motifs abound in the film: a largely deserted cathedral; Moloch; the Tower of Babel; and crosses–intriguingly juxtaposed with a repeating motif of the pentagram-like designs associated with the robot. It is fascinating stuff.
There has been complaint that this restoration runs at incorrect speed and the performances are therefore unnecessarily jerky. I did not find this to be the case. In certain instances the movement is deliberately jerky and mechanical–the workers are a case in point–but beyond this there is nothing for which the difference between silent acting and modern acting techniques cannot account. There has also been some complaint that the title cards should have been left in their original German and translated via subtitle. There is a certain validity to this, but it seems a minor quibble; title cards were typically translated in the silent era itself. The DVD includes a number of extras, including still photographs, biographies of the major figures involved in the film, and two interesting documentaries-one on the restoration process and one on the creation of the film itself. Both are interesting; the audio commentary track by film historian Enno Patalas, however, is mildly disappointing. But when all is said and done, it is the film that counts. And this restoration is a remarkable achievement, to say the least, a project which brings a great landmark of world cinema back from the edge of the abyss. Indispensible; a must-own.
–GFT (Amazon Reviewer)–
This is the 139 minute, tinted version, with the disjointed music, distributed by “JEF films” and labeled “Aikman Archive” in yellow on the box. The sound is bad and the video quality is poor. For superior video quality, get the version produced by Kino Video instead. although the Kino version has a bad sound track, at least the video quality is very good. For superior sound, get the Moroder version of Metropolis.
This review assumes that you have already seen Metropolis. For those unfamiliar with Metropolis, it is considered “the” first SciFi movie — the robot, the cool visual effects of future cities, and a few mad scientist lab scenes. But it is only a great movie IF you see the right version. Sadly, there are more then 6 versions of the film floating around —
Black/white, bad music, slow playback
B/W, bad music, fast playback
tinted, bad music, slow playback
tinted, good music, fast playback
plus a few versions with terrible video quality (the DVD version is such a case) and other versions with missing scenes, a non-logical flow to the story line due to bad editing, etc.
Unfortunately, the situation with prints of Metropolis is a bit of a mess. Those looking for the tinted Girogio Moroder sound track should NOT get this tape.
Although the run time of this version of the movie is 139 minutes, it is actually missing scenes that are in the 90 minute Kino Video and Moroder versions of the tape. The reason is that this 139 minute tape is run at a SLOWER speed than the Kino tape is. Also, the music is totally out of sync and unrelated to the action.
Unfortunately, Moroder’s copy is not available from anywhere. At $24.95, I’d hoped that the folks at Amazon.com had found a copy but this is not the case. Someone should find a good copy of the Moroder tape, sell that, and burn all of the other versions. Although some people object to Moroder’s rock soundtrack, at least it follows the story line and is an excellent sound track on its own.
I was fortunate enough to have seen Moroder’s copy the first time I saw Metropolis and I am very glad that I did.
To add further insult to injury, the CD of Moroder’s soundtrack is not the same as the music that appearred in the movie. The CD has some additional songs and is missing some others. So you can’t redub a video from the CD. So don’t get the “Moroder CD” and expect to remix your own copy of the video.
OK, having provided all of the background info, there is the review:
139-minute B&W version published by JEF films. The cover says it is a “newly restored version”, but image quality is so bad that I would rather call it “newly destroyed version”. It has actually more missing scenes than both Kino’s and Moroder’s versions, but runs longer because of slower frame speed.

Moonlight is one of the best–if not the best–shows to come down the pike in a long while. The slow development of the relationship between Mick and Beth is heartbreakingly realistic. The show is perfectly cast, well-written, and every episode is worth multiple rewatchings; ideal for DVD. Especially notable in the supporting cast is Jason Dohring as Mick’s friend Josef, whose boyish good looks conceal the wisdom of centuries. If you love vampires, you will love Moonlight.
I am absolutely addicted to this show, which recently won the People’s Choice Award for Best New Drama, and deservedly so. This has got to be the sexiest and most original vampire story to come out in a long time, and I can tell you that I am a vampire lover from WAY back! Alex O’Loughlin is THE breakout star of the year, and he is perfectly cast as vampire detective Mick St. John, who struggles with accepting his fate as a self-proclaimed “monster” while acknowledging his very real, very human feelings for reporter Beth Turner.

If you love vampires and wonder what it would be like if vampires walked among us, undetected, in modern-day L.A., you should give Moonlight a try. This show has it all~ action/suspense, drama, romance and plenty of humor. The writing is impressive, and the cast is superb, from O’Loughlin in the lead role to Sophia Myles, Jason Dohring and Shannyn Sossamon. Moonlight is a classic in the making….don’t miss it!

I show segments from the 2057s in my Human Communication on the Internet course. Some students find some of the ideas disturbing, but all students find the information thought-provoking. The presentations of the 2057s are a little cheezy, but the content is great. The 2057s DVDs are a great way to help students picture the possible future of the Internet and computer use.
The giant panda special is one of the best ever made. Now follow me on this, if my veterinarian-daughter helps with the artificial insemination, then she’s at least a little bit the father, and I’m the grandmother. I confess I have a soft spot for Hitchcock’s examination of the conflict between the vows of the priest and the vows of justice. Montgomery Clift plays Father Michael Logan. Father Logan has a murderer confess his deed to him. When Logan becomes a suspect, he’s unable to divulge what was said. When a detective (a superb Karl Malden) begins investigating the murder, he comes to believe that Father Logan is the suspect he’s looking for. Complicating things, is a woman that Logan had an affair with years before and her involvement with the victim.

One of Hitch’s most stylish and the most noir looking thriller of his career, “I Confess” is one of Hitch’s few films to be shot on location in the latter part of his career. Shot in beautiful Quebec, there’s a distinct European flavor to the film due to the city’s distinct architecture and cobblestone streets. Clift gives a soulful performance despite the fact that he and Hitch clashed on the set and having a script compromised by Breen’s editing of the script for offensive material.
Although the film doesn’t quite live up to the standards of “Strangers on a Train” (the film that preceded it) or “Rear Window” (the film after it), it’s a very good minor classic in Hitchcock’s body of work. The transfer looks unusually sharp for the most part and although there is noticeable grain issues here, it’s to be expected given the black and white photography, age of the film and type of film stock used to shoot the film. Wonderful cinematography from Hitchcock’s reliable Robert Burks.

The special features include a short documentary (about 20 minutes) on the making of the film featuring Peter Bogdanovich, Patricia Hitchcock O’Connell and Jack Larson (Jimmy Olsen to those who grew up on “Superman” on TV). There’s also a discussion of the performances and the difficulties in shooting the film with Clift. We also get a vintage newsreel that discusses the premiere of the film in Canada and the original theatrical trailer.
I won’t go into the plot, since everyone else already has…let me just say that this is an EXCELLENT Hitchcock film! I can’t believe I’d never heard of it before, but when I saw it I was blown away. Especially as the priest wrestles more and more with clearing his name at the cost of his priesthood, or keeping silence but being sentenced. The plot twist at the end in the courtroom is great, and shows that this is a true Hitch classic!

All of our familiar friends are holed up here from the loony cops, spiteful pregnant waitress, her clueless boyfriend, misunderstood beauty queen, and badass fisherman (whose fashion taste takes after Torgo from MANOS, THE HANDS OF FATE). Our sympathies are tied to the multiple-barrel shotgun wielding fisherman Marion (Mungo McKay) and the lovely Rene (Felicity Mason). The pair carves a swath through a seemingly endless supply of reanimated corpses only to find that zombies aren’t the full extent of their worries.
Comparing UNDEAD to Australia’s other famous zombie film, DEAD ALIVE, is a tempting albeit simplistic temptation. It’s true that both films share similarities in their use of the walking dead and barrels of fake blood but what the pair share most is their wicked sense of humour. The excessive gore, kinetic camerawork, and outlandish action mix well with the cross genre antics. Hopefully this wonderfully silly film is a sign of things to come from the Spierig brothers.

UNDEAD is slated for release by Lion’s Gate Films while already on DVD in Australia.
This movie is hugely entertaining and the best homage to Night of the
Living Dead, Bad Taste and The Evil Dead ever made. When strange
weather phenomena occurs in a small Australian town, zombies start
appearing. A small group of people end up in a house to fight them off
but have to fight their way out as one of them needs medical attention.
The rest of the movie is spent on fighting the zombies and revealing
their origin. The gore and blood are plentiful and first rate. The
effects are mostly “real” and cgi is at a minimum. There is comedy
throughout but is more of the dry, Aussie/Brit variety so is not
overwhelming or overly stupid. It made me laugh out loud on mamy
occasions. The dialogue is pretty witty and there are many memorable
and quotable lines. There is also a nice twist towards the end of the
story and a good finish that wraps it up, while still leaving ot open
for a deserved sequel.
